With its objective to provide the venue for the presentation and publication of the original research outcome in various domains of Information Retrieval, the conference provided a diverse range of opportunities, i.e., workshops, tutorials, short papers (posters\/demos), full papers, Industry sessions, for the participation and dissemination of research.<\/p>\n<p>The conference started with the workshops and tutorials day <span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\">on<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span> 13<sup><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\">th<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/sup> April. The workshops were arranged in full day and half day sessions, based on the contents and the proposals. The full day workshops were on <a href=\"http:\/\/dcs.gla.ac.uk\/workshops\/iASC2014\/index.html\">Information Access in Smart Cities<\/a> where the theme was:<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>\u201cModern cities are becoming smart where a digital knowledge infrastructure is deployed by local authorities (e.g. City councils and municipalities) to better serve the information needs of their citizens, and to ensure sustainability and efficient use of power and resources. This knowledge infrastructure consists of a wide range of systems from low-level physical sensors to advanced sensing devices through social sensors. This proposed workshop will be a venue for research on digesting the city\u2019s data streams and knowledge databases in order to serve the information needs of citizens and support decision making <span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\">for<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span> local authorities. Possible use cases include helping tourists to find interesting places to go or activities to do while visiting a city, or assisting journalists in reporting local incidents. Indeed, this workshop will foster the development of new information access and retrieval models that can harness effectively and efficiently the large number of heterogeneous big data streams in a city to provide a new generation of information services.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\">and<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span> on <a href=\"http:\/\/carr-workshop.org\/\">Context Aware Retrieval and Recommendations<\/a> with the theme:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cContext-aware information is widely available in various ways, such as interaction patterns, devices, annotations, query suggestions and user profiles and is becoming more important for enhancing retrieval performance. At the moment, the main issue to cope with is not only retrieving the most relevant items and content, but defining them ad hoc. Further relevant issues are personalizing and adapting the information and the way it is displayed to the <span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\">users<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span> current situation (device, location, social surrounding) and interests.\u00a0In the 4th edition of the workshop we want to focus on integrating social context into <span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\">retrieval<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span> and recommendation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The half day workshops were offered on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gesis.org\/en\/events\/conferences\/ecirworkshop2014\">Bibliometric-Enchanced Information Retrieval<\/a> with the aim:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBibliometric techniques are not yet widely used to enhance retrieval processes in digital libraries, although they offer value-added effects for users. In this workshop we will explore how statistical modelling of scholarship, such as Bradfordizing or network analysis of <span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\">coauthorship network<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>, can improve retrieval services for specific communities, as well as for large, cross-domain collections. This workshop aims to raise awareness of the missing link between <span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\">In-formation<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span> Retrieval (IR) and bibliometrics\/scientometrics and to create a common ground for the incorporation of bibliometric-enhanced services into retrieval at the digital library interface.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\">and<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span> <a href=\"http:\/\/gamifir2014.dai-labor.de\/\">Gamification for Information Retrieval<\/a> based on the theme:<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\">Gamification<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span> is the application of game mechanics such as <span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"> <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\">leaderboards<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>, badges or achievement points in non-gaming environments. The goal is to achieve more accurate work, better retention rates, and a more cost-effective solution by relating motivations for participating as more intrinsic than conventional methods. <span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\">Gamification<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span> has recently emerged as a major research area, <span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\">however its<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span> adoption in Information Retrieval (IR) is still in its infancy despite the fact that there are many IR tasks that could potentially benefit from <span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\">gamification<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span> techniques including the manual annotation of documents in IR evaluation, the participation in user studies to study interactive IR challenges, and the move from single-user search to social search. This workshop intends to narrow down and focus on the challenges and opportunities that <span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\">gamification<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span> can present <span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\">for<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span> the IR community. We aim to bring together researchers and practitioners from a wide range of areas including information retrieval, human-computer interaction, computer games, and natural language processing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The large number of delegates participated in the workshops in terms of submissions, presentations and discussion. The formats and executions of the workshops were decided by the respective local chairs.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The tutorials were: \u201cText Quantification\u201d by \u00a0<a title=\"Fabrizio Sebastiani\" href=\"http:\/\/nmis.isti.cnr.it\/sebastiani\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Fabrizio Sebastiani<\/a> from Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche, Italy<span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"> ,<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span> <span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\">Designing Search<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span> Usability by \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/isquared.wordpress.com\/about\/\">Tony Russell-Rose<\/a> from <a href=\"http:\/\/uxlabs.co.uk\/about\/\">UXLabs UK<\/a> and the Cluster Hypothesis in Information Retrieval \u00a0by <a href=\"http:\/\/iew3.technion.ac.il\/~kurland\/\">Oren Kurland<\/a> from Technion \u2013 Israel Institute of Technology. The tutorials covered the respective domain from basic to advanced level and provided the holistic perspective on the respective topics.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">After the workshops and tutorial sessions the social welcome reception was at <a href=\"http:\/\/caferestaurantriva.nl\/en\/\">Riva Amsterdam<\/a>, a nice venue on the canal with the capacious space and the beautiful view of the canal.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2505\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2505\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2505 \" src=\"https:\/\/irsg.bcs.org\/informer\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_2299-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Delegates at Reception\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2505\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Meet and greet at the reception<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The reception lasted till late with the participants socializing and discussing about their interests and enjoying the drinks and snacks.<\/p>\n<p>The second day of the conference started with the welcome note by Maarten de Rijke.  In order to celebrate and appreciate the contributions and the legacy of Karen Sp\u00e4rck Jones, this year\u2019s award was announced to be awarded to \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.mathcs.emory.edu\/~eugene\/\">Eugene Agichtein<\/a>, Mathematics and Computer Science Department, Emory University, Atlanta, USA. Photo courtesy of Iadh Ounis<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Eugene\u2019s KSJ Award Keynote speech was about \u201cInferring Searcher Attention and Intention by Mining Behavior Data\u201d.\u00a0 The talk highlighted the advancements in user-centered IR, the current state of the art and the future directions to incorporate cognitive information to enhance the search experience. Following is the abstract of the talk:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA long standing challenge in Web search is how to accurately determine the intention behind a searchers query, which is needed to rank, organize, and present results most effectively. The difficulty is that users often do not (or cannot) provide sufficient information about their goals. As this talk with show, it is nevertheless possible to read their intentions through clues revealed <span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\">by behavior, such<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span> as the amount of attention paid to a document or a text fragment. I will overview the approaches that have emerged for acquiring and <span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\">mining behavioral<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span> data for inferring search intent, ranging from robust models of click data in the aggregate, to modeling fine-grained user interactions such as mouse cursor movements in the <span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\">searchers<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span> browser. The latter can also be used to measure the searchers attention \u201cin the wild, with granularity approaching that of using eye tracking equipment in the laboratory. The resulting techniques and models have already shown noteworthy improvements <span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\">for<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span> search tasks such as ranking, relevance estimation, and result summary generation, and have applications to other domains, such as psychology, neurology, and online education.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2507\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2507\" style=\"width: 200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2507\" src=\"https:\/\/irsg.bcs.org\/informer\/wp-content\/uploads\/13848979703_4f859ab4c4_o-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"Eugene Receiving KSJ Award\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2507\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Eugene Agichtein receiving Karen Sp\u00e4rck Jones award from Ayse Goker<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>After the coffee break the main conference started in parallel sessions. Session 1A on Evaluation was chaired by Pavel Serdyukov and Session 1B on Recommendations was chaired by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dcs.gla.ac.uk\/~leif\/\">Leif Azzopardi<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>ECIR 2014 offered two poster and demo sessions on different days. The first poster and demo session started after lunch. In the poster sessions the short papers were presented. The first session consisted of 25 posters and 8 demos presenting various IR applications. The poster and demo sessions drew the attention of participants as the lively discussions showed. Posters and demos were numbered to keep <span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\">record<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span> for the best poster and demo award. Each delegate had to vote for the best demo and best poster award.<\/p>\n<p>After the coffee break the second set of parallel sessions started. The session 2A on Optimization and Prediction was chaired by <a href=\"http:\/\/ama.liglab.fr\/~gaussier\/\">Eric Gaussier<\/a> and session 2B on Semantics and Annotations was chaired by Edgar Meij, with three presentations in each session.<\/p>\n<p>The second day ended with the women networking event, where female participants of the conference gathered and socialized to celebrate the role of women in computer science.<\/p>\n<p>At the end of the second day some downtown drinks were arranged, the participation was discretionary, still many participants enjoyed the downtown venue and drinks.<\/p>\n<p>The third day of the conference on Tuesday 15<sup><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\">th<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/sup> April, started with the welcome note by Maarten de Rijke, followed by the panel on the \u201cPanel on Information Retrieval Research Ecosystem\u201d<strong>. <\/strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.seg.rmit.edu.au\/mark\/\">Mark Sanderson<\/a> from RMIT University moderated the panel and the <span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\">panellists<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span> were from academia and industry. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.is.informatik.uni-duisburg.de\/staff\/fuhr.html.en\">Norbert Fuhr<\/a> from the University of Duisburg-Essen and <a href=\"http:\/\/vbn.aau.dk\/en\/persons\/birger-larsen(9cb12135-a825-43ba-87e2-b71651b91939).html\">Birger Larsen<\/a> from Aalborg University, Denmark participated as the academicians while for the industry side <a href=\"http:\/\/ru.linkedin.com\/in\/pavelserdyukov\">Pavel Serdyukov<\/a> from Yandex and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/labs.yahoo.com\/author\/pmika\/\">Peter Mika<\/a> <span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\">form<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span> Yahoo! Labs were on the panel. The main objective was to portray the overall landscape of information retrieval where academic and industry scale research is taking place. The <span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\">panellists<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span> emphasized on the reproducibility of the experiment results with the open public <span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\">datasets<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>. The industry should consider the joint venture with the academia and facilitate the researchers to collaborate and make use of data there to enhance the overall research in IR. The <span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\">panellists<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span> from industry highlighted some of the provisions and internships that help researchers in academia <span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\">to collaborate<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span> and make use industry data. The panel replied the questions from audiences as well. In the end Mark concluded by highlighting some of the advancements in IR research in general.<\/p>\n<p>After the coffee break the parallel sessions of the third conference day started. Session 3A Evaluation II was chaired by <a href=\"http:\/\/ils.unc.edu\/~jarguell\/\">Jaime Arguello<\/a> and the session 3B on Aggregation was chaired by <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.google.com\/site\/fcrestani\/\">Fabio Crestani<\/a>.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2508\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2508\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2508\" src=\"https:\/\/irsg.bcs.org\/informer\/wp-content\/uploads\/20140415_185351-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Captured moment form Boat\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2508\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Capturing the moment during the boat trip<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>After the lunch break the second poster and demo session took place where 25 posters and 7 demos were presented. Like the first poster and demo session this session also remained lively and interactive. The participants showed keen interest in poster presentations and the demos.<\/p>\n<p>The day continued with two further parallel sessions: the session 4A on Queries, chaired by <a href=\"http:\/\/staff.science.uva.nl\/~kamps\/\">Jaap Kamps<\/a> and the session 4B on Mining Social Media chaired by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dcs.gla.ac.uk\/~ounis\/\">Iadh Ounis<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>One of the highlights of ECIR 2014 was \u201cBoat \u2018n\u2019 Banquet\u201d, a boat trip on the Amstel river followed by the banquet at Jamie Oliver\u2019s\u00a0<a title=\"fifteen Amsterdam\" href=\"http:\/\/www.fifteen.nl\/\">Fifteen<\/a> Restaurant. The boat route was passing through the city center so that the participants could experience the beautiful view of the Amsterdam City from the boat. To many sightseeing from the boat was a new and exciting experience, hence the participants enjoyed the boat trip and captured the moments in cameras.<\/p>\n<p>The boat left the participants near the Jamie Oliver\u2019s\u00a0<a title=\"fifteen Amsterdam\" href=\"http:\/\/www.fifteen.nl\/\">Fifteen<\/a> Restaurant. On the arrival drinks were served, followed by announcements for the best paper, poster and demo awards. <a href=\"http:\/\/staff.science.uva.nl\/~mdr\/\">Maarten <span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\">de<\/span> Rijke<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.johntait.net\/\">John Tait<\/a> announced the awards for the best paper, best poster, best demo and the best reviewer awards, the latter being a new award introduced at ECIR 2014. The conference organizers arranged the tram tickets for the participants to the Amsterdam Central station where after everyone went to their respective accommodations or out to enjoy a further piece of Amsterdam\u2019s nightlife.<\/p>\n<p>Wednesday, 16<sup><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\">th<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/sup> April was the fourth and final day of the conference, which started with the opening note by <a href=\"http:\/\/staff.science.uva.nl\/~mdr\/\">Maarten <span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\">de<\/span> Rijke<\/a>. He thanked the generous sponsors and presented some facts about the conference so far. As the final day was <span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\">designated<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span> mainly to industry, the key-note speaker was <a href=\"http:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/giladmishne\">Gilad Mishne<\/a> from Twitter who presented on the topic \u201cReal-time Search at Twitter\u201d:  <strong> <\/strong> \u201cTwitter\u2019s search engine faces some of the most unique challenges in information retrieval and distributed systems today. On the scaling front, it\u2019s a relatively young system with a massive user base, billions of queries daily, and many billions of indexed documents \u2013 with thousands being added every second. On the ranking side, the combination of <span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\">realtime<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span> and social requires new solutions to relevance estimation for newly-created documents, blending different types of live content, evaluation in the absence of direct user feedback, and more. On top of this, the dynamic nature of a nascent company and product leads to a multitude of operational challenges and opportunities. Photo courtesy of ECIR2014 Organizers<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>After the key-note and coffee break the delegates could choose between three industry sessions and sessions on Digital Libraries chaired by <a href=\"http:\/\/ims.dei.unipd.it\/websites\/archive\/ims2009\/members\/ferro\/\">Nicola Ferro<\/a>, Efficiency chaired by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cs.otago.ac.nz\/homepages\/andrew\/\">Andrew Trotman<\/a> and IR Theory chaired by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.is.informatik.uni-duisburg.de\/staff\/fuhr.html.en\">Norbert Fuhr<\/a>, respectively.\u00a0 The industry sessions were on Structure, Global Search Engines and eCommerce and Product Search, chaired by David Carmel &amp; Thijs Westerveld.<\/p>\n<p>The Conference <span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\">was\u00a0<span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\">concluded<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"> <\/span><\/span><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"> <\/span><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"> <\/span><\/span><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"> <\/span><\/span><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"> <\/span><\/span><span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\"> <\/span> by <a href=\"http:\/\/staff.science.uva.nl\/~mdr\/\">Maarten <span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\">de<\/span> Rijke<\/a><strong>, <\/strong>who highlighted some of the facts about <span class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\">the conference<\/span>. Finally the torch was handed over to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ifs.tuwien.ac.at\/~andi\/\">Andreas Rauber<\/a> who introduced the conference location for <a href=\"http:\/\/ecir2015.ifs.tuwien.ac.at\/wp\/\">ECIR 2015<\/a>, which will take by the beautiful blue Danube in Vienna, Austria.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2512\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2512\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2512\" src=\"https:\/\/irsg.bcs.org\/informer\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_2382-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Concluding remarks My Maarten\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2512\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">ECIR 2014 was indeed a success<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>ECIR2014 was a very inspiring, informative and enjoyable event.
