I am in the process of rebuilding the web site and so many of the internal links to reviews of the books will no longer exist. I have now revised the list so that the links are to the web sites of the publishers and so should stand the test of time.<\/p>\n<p>If there are any books that you feel should be included, please email me with your suggestions.<\/p>\n<p>The list is in reverse chronological order of publication, going back to 2010. There are of course many earlier books, notably <a href=\"https:\/\/nlp.stanford.edu\/IR-book\/information-retrieval-book.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Introduction to Information Retrieval<\/a> by Manning, Raghavan and Schutze but I had to stop somewhere. The earliest book on my bookshelf is An Introduction to Modern Information Retrieval by none other than Gerard Salton and Michael McGill, published in 1986.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sheffield.pressbooks.pub\/eshistory1\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">History of enterprise search 1938-2022 <\/a>Martin White<br \/>\nA history of the development of enterprise search from punched cards to artificial intelligence (2022)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facetpublishing.co.uk\/page\/detail\/taxonomies\/?k=9781783304837\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Taxonomies \u2013 Practical Approaches to Developing and Managing Vocabularies for Digital Information<\/a> Helen Lippell (Editor)<br \/>\nA valuable introduction to taxonomy management from a wide range of authors, including some specific contributions on enterprise search (2022)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.morganclaypool.com\/doi\/abs\/10.2200\/S01166ED1V01Y202202ICR077\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Understanding and evaluating search experience <\/a> Maria Stone<br \/>\nAlthough the focus is on web search (the author works for Spotify) the book has relevance to all search implementations. (2022)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.springerprofessional.de\/en\/making-knowledge-management-clickable\/20217856\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Making Knowledge Management Clickable<\/a> Zach Wahl and Joseph Hilger<br \/>\nThis book spans what is so often a crevasse between knowledge management and IT systems management (2022)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/intranetfocus.com\/the-autobiography-of-david-hawking-and-the-enterprising-story-of-pnoptic-funnelback-and-squiz\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">David Hawking \u2013 an autobiography<\/a><br \/>\nDavid Hawking was a pioneer in the development of commercial enterprise search applications. (2022)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/press.princeton.edu\/books\/hardcover\/9780691179544\/information\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Information \u2013 A Historical Introduction<\/a><strong>. <\/strong> Ann Blair, Paul Duguid, Anja-Silvia Goeing, and Anthony Grafton (Editors)<br \/>\nA 900 page collection of 13 chapters and over 100 essays on the development of information management over the last six centuries.(2021)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nowpublishers.com\/article\/Details\/INR-073\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Search Interface Design and Evaluation<\/a> Chang Liu, Ying-Hsang Liu, Jingjing Liu and Ralf Bierig<br \/>\nA comprehensive review of the research literature on the design and evaluation of search user interfaces. (2021)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cambridge.org\/core\/books\/trustworthy-online-controlled-experiments\/D97B26382EB0EB2DC2019A7A7B518F59\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Trustworthy Online Controlled Experiments <\/a> Ron Kohavi, Diane Tang and Ya Xu<br \/>\nA\/B testing is a core element in the development of effective search applications.\u00a0 The authors have extensive experience from working at Microsoft, Google and LinkedIn (2021)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.morganclaypool.com\/doi\/abs\/10.2200\/S01103ED1V01Y202105ICR074\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Task intelligence for search and recommendation<\/a> Chirag Shah and Ryen W. White<br \/>\nThe focus of this book is on the ways in which the intent of a search user can be determined by the search application in order to improve recall and relevance. (2021)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/book\/10.1007\/978-3-030-38825-6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Understanding and Improving Information Search \u2013 a Cognitive Approach<\/a> Wai Tat Fu and Herre van Oostendorp<br \/>\nA collection of 13 essays on the benefits of adopting a cognitive approach to information search, many with direct relevance to optimising enterprise search. (2020)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nowpublishers.com\/article\/Details\/INR-061\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">An introduction to neural information retrieval<\/a> Bhaskar Mitra and Nick Craswell<br \/>\nThis is a good introduction to the principles of neutral information retrieval with a particular emphasis on the role and challenges of machine learning (2018)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facetpublishing.co.uk\/page\/detail\/systematic-searching\/?K=9781783303731\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Systematic Searching \u2013 Practical Ideas for Improving Results<\/a> Paul Levy and Jenny Craven (Editors)<br \/>\nSystematic searching is undertaken largely in the clinical and pharmaceutical sectors where high levels of retrieval are essential.(2017)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nowpublishers.com\/article\/Details\/INR-053\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Searching the Enterprise<\/a> Udo Kruschwitz and Charlie Hull<br \/>\nThe authors provide an important bridge between information retrieval research and the practical implementation of search applications. White<br \/>\nAlthough the focus of this book is on web search, the principles also apply to e-commerce and enterprise search. Case and Lisa M. Given<br \/>\nA survey of research on information seeking, needs and behaviour, which places search into the wider context of why people seek information and how they interact with search systems. (2016)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/dl.acm.org\/doi\/book\/10.1145\/2915031\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Text Data Management and Analysis<\/a> Cheng Xiang Zhai and Sean Massung<br \/>\nA very comprehensive handbook on the technology of information retrieval and content analytics based on a highly regarded MOOC.(2016)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.oreilly.com\/library\/view\/enterprise-search\/9781449330439\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Enterprise Search<\/a> Martin White<br \/>\nMy objective was to write a book for search managers without a technical background that supported the entire process from building a business case through to evaluating performance. (2015)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.manning.com\/books\/relevant-search\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Relevant Search<\/a> Doug Turnbull and John Berryman<br \/>\nThe objective of all search applications is to deliver the most relevant results as early as possible in the list of results. Although based around the management of Lucene and Solr this book is applicable to any search application. (2015)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/book\/11131\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Inquiring Organisation<\/a> Chun Wei Choo<br \/>\nThe importance of this book is that it provides a context for search within an overall integration of the value of information and knowledge to the organisation. (2015)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facetpublishing.co.uk\/page\/detail\/introduction-to-information-behaviour\/?k=9781783301843\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Introduction to Information Behaviour<\/a> Nigel Ford<br \/>\nInformation seeking models are a special case of information behaviours. They form the basis of use cases for search, and the design of user interfaces. (2015)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/designingthesearchexperience.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Designing the Search Experience<\/a> Tony Russell-Rose and Tyler Tate<br \/>\nThis book takes a deep look into information seeking models, using them to consider how best to design user interfaces. (2012)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/book\/10.1007\/978-3-642-23008-0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Multilingual Information Retrieval<\/a> Carol Peters, Martin Braschler and Paul Clough<br \/>\nA good introduction to the basic principles of multilingual and cross-lingual search. (2012)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cambridge.org\/core\/books\/interactive-information-seeking-behaviour-and-retrieval\/633CF91BC3C032F4BA1B569723F06433\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Interactive Information Seeking, Behaviour and Retrieval<\/a> Ian Ruthven and Diane Kelly (editors)<br \/>\nA collection of 13 essays on a range of topics (2011)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/rosenfeldmedia.com\/books\/search-analytics-for-your-site\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Search Analytics for Your Site<\/a> Louis Rosenfeld<br \/>\nThis introduction to search analytics is primarily about websites and intranets but the principles apply to enterprise search.
