{"id":8067,"date":"2023-10-13T11:23:53","date_gmt":"2023-10-13T10:23:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/irsg.bcs.org\/informer\/?p=8067"},"modified":"2023-10-13T11:23:53","modified_gmt":"2023-10-13T10:23:53","slug":"fdia-2023","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive-irsg.bcs.org\/informer\/?p=8067","title":{"rendered":"FDIA 2023"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/2023.essir.eu\/FDIA\/\">Future Directions in Information Access (FDIA) 2023 symposium<\/a><br \/>\nwas held on Friday 1 September 2023 in Vienna, Austria in conjunction with <a href=\"https:\/\/2023.essir.eu\/\">ESSIR 2023<\/a><br \/>\n. The purpose of FDIA is to provide Master and PhD students as well as early-<br \/>\ncareer researchers a platform to discuss their research and project ideas with experts in the field.<\/p>\n<p>35 people attended the event with 9 mentors and 26 students. Six students presented their work,<br \/>\nwhich was peer-reviewed by the FDIA program committee. The presentations were very well<br \/>\nreceived and attracted lots of discussions and questions for each paper, from the mentors and peer<br \/>\nstudents. From the feedback of the attendees, we have learnt that people enjoyed the talks and the<br \/>\ndiscussion very much. People also liked the panel discussion session on career development, where<br \/>\nall mentors shared their career path and advice, and on future research directions of information<br \/>\naccess, where both mentors and mentees discussed their views of current and future research<br \/>\nchallenges and opportunities. The talks and discussion complemented the ESSIR schedule, where<br \/>\nestablished research is presented, with novel and fresh ideas, particularly in times when rapid<br \/>\ndevelopments in generative AI are providing new opportunities and challenges. The half day event<br \/>\nseems to be short to many students. They suggested in their feedback to have a longer sessions with<br \/>\nmore group discussions and a poster session, which we hope to implement in the future FDIAs.<\/p>\n<p>The FDIA proceedings will be published at CEUR.<\/p>\n<p>We, the three organisers Haiming Liu, Ingo Frommholz and Yashar Moshfeghi, would like to thank all<br \/>\nthe students and mentors for their participation and contribution and would like to thank the ESSIR<br \/>\n2023 organisers Florina Piroi and Allan Hanbury for hosting the successful FDIA.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Future Directions in Information Access (FDIA) 2023 symposium was held on Friday 1 September 2023 in Vienna, Austria in conjunction with ESSIR 2023 .
