ECIR 2024 Glasgow – a status report

The 46th European Conference on Information Retrieval (ECIR 2024) will be held in Glasgow, Scotland, 24th-28th March 2024. ECIR is the annual premier European forum for the presentation of new research results in Information Retrieval.

ECIR will be held in central Glasgow at the excellent Radisson Blu hotel (actually, Radisson Blu was also the venue for the very successful ECIR 2023 in Dublin). The venue is surrounded by bistros, restaurants, pubs and other amenities and within 5 minutes walking distance to all the main Glasgow city landmarks.

In addition to the Keynote Presentations and the Full Paper, Short Paper, Reproducibility, Demonstrations tracks, along with Workshops, Tutorials, the Doctoral Consortium and a dedicated Industry Day, ECIR 2024 will introduce a number of innovations for ECIR.  For example, ECIR 2024 will run a special IR for Good track that will present high-quality, high-impact, original IR-related research in societal issues (such as algorithmic bias and fairness, privacy, and transparency) at the interdisciplinary level (e.g., philosophy, law, sociology, civil society), beyond the purely technical perspective. ECIR 2024 will also introduce a new innovation called the “Collab-a-thon” that is intended to provide an opportunity for participants to foster new collaborations that can lead to exciting new research, and forge lasting relationships with likeminded researchers. Finally, ECIR 2024 will include for the first time a formal “Findings” track, which will be offered to some full papers that are deemed to be solid, but which cannot make the main conference track.

We are looking forward to presenting a high-quality programme for ECIR 2024. So far, we have received a bumper crop of submissions for the Full Paper, Short Paper, Reproducibility Paper and Demonstration tracks. We are still accepting submissions for the IR for Good track (abstracts are due October 23rd, AOE), Tutorials (proposals are due October 25th, AOE), the Industry Day presentations (proposal due November 9th, AoE) and the Doctoral Consortium (expressions of interest due November 6th, AoE). For further information, and to make a submission, see the individual calls for papers at https://www.ecir2024.org/category/calls.

We have a number of social events planned, including the customary conference banquet and a welcome reception at the magnificent Glasgow city chambers (hosted by the Lord Provost of Glasgow).

We have several confirmed sponsors already, including Google, SIGIR Friends, the Scottish Informatics Computer Science Alliance (SICSA), Springer, Glasgow City Council Convention Bureau and the University of Glasgow IR Group. We are also in active discussions with a number of other sponsors. If you would like to sponsor ECIR 2024 you can view our sponsorship packages in our call for sponsorship here: https://www.ecir2024.org/2023/03/24/call-for-sponsorship. We are also happy to tailor specific sponsorship packages. Please get in touch if you would like to discuss possibilities.

We look forward to welcoming you to Glasgow in March for ECIR 2024!

A note from the Editor

I’ve been travelling to Glasgow for over a decade as our son Simon lived in the city until moving south last year. It is a superb venue for a conference. Glasgow has easy access by air,  train and road, and a very compact city centre with a huge range of restaurants, museums and galleries. If you bring your partner then the main shopping area rivals the Bahnhofstrasse in Zurich! Make sure you book a couple of days each side of the conference to explore the area!
