18 September TALMIRI – Talent meets IR Industry, Bedford

TALMIRI is a new initiative for IRSG to complement the annual Search Solutions conference. It will be one-day symposium with the purpose of bringing together young and senior researchers and practitioners from industry on topics related to search and information retrieval. The objective is to awareness of industry-relevant topics on one hand and the cutting-edge works of researchers on the other hand, to foster knowledge transfer and encourage discussion as well as networking in a relaxed and constructive atmosphere.

The event will be held at Putteridge Bury, a neo-Elizabethan manor house built in 1911 in the style of Chequers, with beautiful grounds and reflecting pool. http://www.beds.ac.uk/putteridgebury

There will be speakers from industry to giving talks about industry-related topics and problems in the area of enterprise search. Furthermore, young researchers, in particular PhD students, will be given the opportunity to present and discuss their work and ideas with industry practitioners and senior researchers. There will also be a poster session so that students can further discuss their work and ideas.

23 October Karen Spärck Jones Lecture, London

This lecture is held in honour of Karen Spärck Jones, one of the most remarkable women in computer science. It is sponsored by the BCS Academy of Computing and IBM. A Fellow of the British Academy, Karen had a long, rich and remarkable career as a pioneer of information science from the very early days of computing. 25/26 November Search Solutions 2019, London

The dates for Search Solutions 2019 have been confirmed as 25 November 2019 for the Tutorial and 26 November for the main event. The venue will be the new BCS offices in 25 Copthall Avenue, Moorgate. This is a newly-refurbished ground floor space within a five minute walk of six Underground lines, the Overground, National Rail and in due course the Elizabeth Line. The office is on the western side of Copthall Avenue, close to its junction with London Wall.

14-17 April 2020 ECIR 2020, Lisbon

The call for papers for ECIR 2020 is now open. The deadline for full papers is 1 October and for short papers it is 15 October. If you read the ECIR2019 conference report below you will appreciate the high standard and broad range of the conference. Then add in Lisbon in the Spring. What more do you want in the way of an incentive?
